The idea for the Merging Galaxies collection came to Olga Yatskaer after being captivated by videos showcasing the merging of galaxies. The images of two or more galaxies coming together to form something entirely new and beautiful left a lasting impression. The interplay of gravity between the galaxies resembled an elegant waltz, with stars and planetary systems remaining intact despite the immense forces at play. This inspired Olga to depict the merging galaxies and their planetary systems in a unique jewelry collection.
What sets the Merging Galaxies collection apart is its innovative design. The collection features three main elements, including two different sizes of centerpieces representing merging galaxies, links symbolizing planet systems, and earpieces representing planets. Each element is intricately designed with a network-shaped pattern on the back, symbolizing the gravitational forces at work. When worn, the pieces continuously transform as the elements turn, creating a mesmerizing optical illusion of gemstones set within the jewelry.
The realization of the Merging Galaxies collection involves a blend of traditional and high-tech production approaches. Currently, the collection offers versions in yellow gold 18K with jade, gold-plated sterling silver with lapis lazuli, rhodium-plated sterling silver with onyx, and white gold with lapis lazuli. The use of different metals and gemstones allows for countless combinations, ensuring each piece is unique.
The technical specifications of the Merging Galaxies collection include a large centerpiece measuring approximately 65x13x55mm with a custom-cut lapis lazuli cabochon. The smaller centerpiece measures 32x7x28mm with a 10x8 cabochon. The links range from 25x6x32mm with a 13x18 cabochon to 14x4x17mm with an 8x10 cabochon. The earpiece has a diameter of approximately 12mm.
All pieces in the Merging Galaxies collection are based on the same five elements, allowing for various combinations and designs. The collection currently includes colliers, bracelets, earrings, and pendants, each showcasing the intricate details and optical illusions created by the fine engravings. The backside designs of the elements add an extra dimension, visually transforming the pieces when turned around.
The Merging Galaxies collection was initially designed in 2016 in Wavre, Belgium, with the addition of larger and more visible pieces in 2018. The collection was presented at the 10th Salon de Creations in Brabant Wallon, where it garnered attention during a fashion parade. The entire video of the event can be viewed on the official site of TVCom, the TV channel of Brabant Wallon province.
Olga Yatskaer's research for the Merging Galaxies collection focused on finding shapes and elements that evoke an extraterrestrial feel. The challenge was to create base elements that harmoniously fit together in different combinations, allowing for the creation of multiple pieces. Technical difficulties were overcome through 3D modeling and laser welding, ensuring the precision and quality of the final pieces.
The Merging Galaxies collection by Olga Yatskaer is a testament to the beauty of merging galaxies and the creativity of the designer. With its unique design, intricate details, and optical illusions, this jewelry collection is a true work of art.
